Tonkov to Australia

answer (1)

MX2 grand prix race winner Aleksandr Tonkov could potentially be heading to Australia for the 2017 Motul MX Nationals series, according to European motocross website GateDrop.com.

The 23-year-old Russian has been denied access to Europe due to passport issues, which are not expected to be resolved well into the 2017 Motocross World Championship, forcing him to seek alternative options for the new year.

Following Kade Mosig’s departure from the Kawasaki Racing Team, increasing local speculation has linked Tonkov to take on the role as lead MX1 rider with the Queensland-based outfit alongside 450 rookie Nathan Crawford.

With majority of Australia’s championship-calibre talent locked in for 2017, Tonkov would prove a suitable candidate to put Kawasaki in contention for a national motocross title against fellow former grand prix regulars Dean Ferris and Todd Waters.

Tonkov was slated to make his debut in the MXGP class with the Wilvo Yamaha team next year after reaching the MX2 age limit of 23, however the team has also already signed Shaun Simpson and Arnaud Tonus. In 2016, Tonkov completed the MX2 World Championship in 10th, despite missing the last six rounds of the season.
